Five new CBPs on Day 2 of the Northern Championships at the EIS
The World heptathlon champions Jessica Ennis (City of Sheffield) was again in impressive form on Day 2 of the Northern Championships at the EIS. Equally impressive in the final field event of the 2010 championships, the women’s high jump, was Vikki Hubbard (Birchfield H). Both Ennis and Hubbard equalled the CBP of Susan Jones set in 2001 with their clearances at 1.89m. Vikki Hubbard’s delight was clear for all to see as in equalling the CBP she set a new lifetime best – her previous best of 1.88m set in 2006 had weighed heavily on her shoulders over recent seasons. Ennis then set the bar at 1.96m in what was to prove an unsuccessful attempt to set a new UK record of which she is the joint holder. However, her rivals for the World pentathlon gold will have been left in no doubt over the last week that she will be the one to beat in Doha in March.
In the U20 women’s long jump the World Youth heptathlon champion Katarina Johnson-Thompson (Liverpool H) bettered her own CBP of last year by 15cm jumping 6.20m to take the gold medal. In so doing she goes to equal 6th on the UKAT U20 indoor rankings, just 4cm short of the UK U20 indoor record of 6.24m set by Bev Kinch in 1982.
The pace set by Jonathan Taylor (Morpeth H) in the senior men’s 3000m was far too quick for the rest of the field and he crossed the line 12 seconds clear of the silver medallist Phil Hurst (Elswick H) to reset his 2009 CBP at 8.10.77. In the U20 men’s 800m final James Bowness (Trafford AC) took the title in a new CBP of 1.52.04 to better by over a second the time set by Robbie Schofield last year.
Alex Kiwomya (Rotherham H) completed the U15 boys’ sprint double taking 200m gold in 22.62 to take over 3/10ths of a second off James Armstrong’s 2007 CBP mark and set a new lifetime best. He now goes to second on the UKAT 15 indoor rankings – the record stands at 22.57.
The fourth field event CBP of the weekend was set by Hannah Evenden (Edinburgh AC) in the U20 women’s shot with her 14.09m. The previous best was the 13.82m of Amy Hill in 2008. Evenden, who has only recently recovered from a back operation, also broke her PB from the previous weekend in Loughborough by over half a metre.
