Pennine Lancashire 5k

This year the Northern Athletics 5k championship was incorporated into the Pennine Lancashire 5k rod race, which also included the England Athletics championship.

The Northern Athletics championship race was again hosted by Blackburn Harriers, but this time the race was based not in the town centre, but at Witton Park, with the event again using closed roads. The out and back course started outside the park running towards Blackburn before finishing inside Witton Park.

The combined entry for the race was almost 250 athletes, with almost half being in the N.A. championships event. The race was started at the top of the hill on Preston Old road, and the early fast pace never abated, despite the blustery conditions.

Northern Athletics Road Relay Results

Ken Smith reports on the 12 & 6 stage road relays. It was in Heaton Park in 2005 that Chester Le Street last failed to win this Northern Athletics Championship road relay, so would they achieve the remarkable 5 wins in a row. Well when Mike Bateman, the Morpeth team manager, saw the Chester le Street team sheet, he had no doubts they would. He describe their team as "Consistent ", and he was not far wrong, with 5 out of the 6 girls winning their individual legs.

Northern Indoor Champs Day 2 Report

The World heptathlon champions Jessica Ennis (City of Sheffield) was again in impressive form on Day 2 of the Northern Championships at the EIS. Equally impressive in the final field event of the 2010 championships, the women’s high jump, was Vikki Hubbard (Birchfield H). Both Ennis and Hubbard equalled the CBP of Susan Jones set in 2001 with their clearances at 1.89m. Vikki Hubbard’s delight was clear for all to see as in equalling the CBP she set a new lifetime best – her previous best of 1.88m set in 2006

Northern Indoor Champs Day 1 Report

Seven new CBPs on Day 1 of the Northern Championships at the EIS

The World heptathlon champions Jessica Ennis continued with the good early season form she showed at Loughborough last weekend with her performance on Day 1 of the Northern Championships at the EIS in Sheffield. She took the shot title with a new indoor PB of 13.83 and later on in the day, though she was slow out of her blocks, claimed gold in the 60m in a new CBP time of 7.36 – not bad for an athlete who according to AW competes but rarely over the 60m! Bernice Wilson (Birchfield H) who had led until the final 20 metres took silver in 7.37.

Northern Athletics 10 Mile Championship

On a wet Sunday morning at the end of November the race course at Thirsk took on a colourful appearance, as over 1200 runners crossed the course to make their way to the start. This was the 2nd year that Northern Athletics have utilised this race for their 10 mile championship, and as the number have increased, so the times have decreased.

FOR over a century handicap racing was the fashion for the majority of club athletes seeking track competition.
Championship events were the exception even though meetings were generally held on cricket and sports fields or, if you were lucky, on a shale surface. However, with the advent of synthetic tracks and a move to metric distances handicap fixtures gradually disappeared from the amateur scene

The course now included use of one carriageway of the ring road which provided the longest and fastest section of the course. After the younger age group races the 5K was started at 12-00 almost outside the old town hall in Blackburn

Senior/Under 20 Championship Day 1 Report

On Day 1 of the Northern Senior and U20 championships at a rather dull and windy Sport City Manchester the Leeds City senior men showed that whatever their U17 men could do they could as well.

There was a 1-2-3 for Leeds City in the U17 men’s 1500m at Gateshead. The senior men replicated this achievement in the 5000m. Their trio of Alan Buckley, Adam Grice and Dave Webb were never out of the leading group and frequently exchanged the lead. At one point they were content to follow Sunderland’s Mark Hood, but over the closing stages a further injection of pace from Dave Webb split up the leading group of six. The only two who could go with him were Grice and Buckley. Webb won in a time of 14.29.14, with Grice second and Buckley third.

PB for Michael Rimmer

Merseyside Athlete Michael Rimmer continues to make fantastic progress at 800m and has finally ducked under 1.45.00. In a star studded field in Monaco Michael was brilliantly placed third with 200m to go when the pacemaker, Sammy Tangui (Kenya), failed to get out of the way in time and Rimmer ran into him. By now the leaders were gone but Michael stuck gamely to the task and came home 6th behind the winner Yuriy Borzakovskiy of Russia ((1.42.79). He was, however, rewarded with a personal best time of 1.44.68 and will be greatly encouraged as he makes his way to Beijing..

Richard N Ripley (Dick) ran in the 1924 Olympic Games, along with Abrahams & Liddell. He was not mentioned in the film Chariots of Fire but was a very great athlete in his own right. From 1924 to 1926 Dick represented the AAA in all the representative matches, being the only runner to have done so, and he never failed to count for his team.
Dick was the Northumberland and Durham Champion at 440 yards for six consecutive years, an achievement that has never been beaten.

Frank Starkie Memorial Cup

British Association of Track and Field Leagues (BATFL) are honouring the memory of its former chair Frank Starkie for club officials called the Frank Starkie Memorial Cup. Nominations can only be made by clubs, who are members of leagues affiliated to BATFL. Nominees must be a member of a track and field club that competes in “League” athletics. Citations should draw attention to the nominee’s work for the club or league as organiser, official, team manager or helper showing the breadth of tasks and/ or the time they have been carried out. Where the nominee has delivered great service “against all odds” the challenging circumstances should be described to do justice to the award.” It is intended that this award will be presented alongside other UKA meritorious awards.

Liverpool “Olympic Festivals” of the 1860s

Founded in 1896 the modern Olympic movement was the based on the ideas and philosophy of the ancient Greeks; however others had been thinking along similar lines prior to 1896. The Olympic Festival which was held in Liverpool in the 1860s is one such an example. We have reproduced an article on the Olympic festival written by Bob Phillips, which was first published in 2006 on our previous website.

Perhaps to no great surprise from the knowledgeable and enthusiastic spectators who followed each of the hammer competitions with great interest, Sophie Hitchon set a new CPB in the U20 women’s hammer, having already taken the senior women’s gold on Day 1. Her first round throw of 58.42m erased the 57.12m of Sarah Holt’s set in the same stadium in 2006. Melissa Carr won the U20 triple jump with a new CBP of 12.21m bettering the 12.17m set by Justina Cruickshank in 1996. There was also a new CBP in the U20 women’s pole vault where Abigail Haywood cleared 3.85m – a new lifetime best that took her to 3rd on this season’s P10 rankings.

Day 1 of the Northern Championships at Sport City Manchester saw the sun shine for most of the day, but most of the sprints we run into a strong headwind.

Just one Championship record fell on day 1. It was the longest standing record that was erased when Carl Myerscough threw 19.87m to beat the previous best in the shot- 18.81m set by the legendary Arthur Rowe back in 1962. Myerscough is in good form at present with a SB of 20.38m to rank second in the UK and it is that form that has led to his call up to the European Cup team to replace Mark Edward

GLORIOUS weather greeted athletes to Gateshead Stadium for the North Eastern Counties Track and Field Championships, with sprinters and jumpers taking full advantage of the conditions. Pole vaulters really rose to the occasion on a weekend which produced 19 new championship records – as well as new figures in four events contained in the programme for the first time.

Billy Clarke 1908 Olympic Marathon

100 years ago the Olympics paid their first visit to Britain the marathon was run from Windsor to London. The Marathon course had previously been 25 miles long. For the 1908 race the previously agreed starting line was moved to the Home Park at Windsor to allow the Royal Family to view the start; the finishing line was not changed. The resulting distance - 26 miles, 385 yards - has been the standard marathon distance ever since London. Northern athlete Billy Clarke played a small part in that historical event.
